SharePoint Foundation 2010

Microsoft SharePoint Foundation 2010 is the foundation (as it says on the tin) for all the SharePoint 2010 products and technologies.  It is a great server application that can provide many excellent benefits to a business and is provided 'free' by Microsoft to anyone using Windows Server 2008 or Microsoft Small Business Server 2010

Sinet Consulting will be at the front of the wave of knowledge regarding the new versions and will recommend to customers any actions or preparations they should take in preparing for the updated products.  It is our normal practice to only recommend upgrading systems as and when it is appropriate for our customers and when real benefits can be gained.

We are currently updating the site below this level

Release date - Sinet Consulting believe that in removing the 'Office' part of the new Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 name Microsoft have decoupled the release of the next version of SharePoint from the release of the Office Suite 2010 which will be expected in late 2009.  We believe that it is unlikely that SharePoint 2010 will be released to production before Q2 of 2010.  The first major Microsoft event giving full details of the new product will be held in Las Vegas starting 19 October 2009.

Some quick points to note;

  • In the SP2 service pack for WSS and MOSS Microsoft included an "preupgradecheck" tool to produce a report on the ability of the installed system to be upgraded to the 2010 SharePoint range of products.  The tool is also an excellent tool for just getting details on your current setup.
  • Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 will be a 64-bit application only.  It will not be available for production licensed environments in 32-bit.
  • Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 will only be available for installation on Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2
  • Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 will require the 64-bit version of SQL Server 2005 or the 64-bit versions of SQL Server 2008
  • Microsoft Groove is becoming SharePoint Workspace 2010!  The name makeover is in recognition of the way the portfolio of SharePoint products is going and will lessen the confusion of where SharePoint ends and Groove starts (or the 'What is groove then?' question.  SharePoint Workspace will provide easy access to SharePoint content in an effort to provide a seamless online/offline experience for SharePoint users that travel.  SharePoint Workspace 2010 will be easier to deploy and easier to manage, and it supports a new set of scenarios to help Office and SharePoint users be more productive.  It will also make it easier for us IT people to explain and implement a consistent information strategy based on SharePoint technology throughout the organization.  SharePoint Workspace will come bundled with the Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010 suite of products.
